Love it or loathe it, the internet is now an integral part of modern living and just as it has in other areas of life the cyber world has made its mark on dating. Indeed, there are now many websites that offer virtual matchmaking and for those in search of love, increase your chances of meeting Mr of Miss right!
Take a poll from your closest friends about finding a true love match on dating websites and you’ll probably find opinion split. Certainly, not as drastic as the definite ‘love it or hate it’ Marmite variety, but certainly almost equally divided between people who will warn you off and those who will say ‘go for it’!
However, like every other avenue of life dating websites are what you make of them! There are plenty of people out there who have married after meeting online. Equally there are many other people who are still happily or even unhappily single, after using dating websites. Just like in the real world there are no guarantees about finding true love, but for dating websites it is simply a numbers game. Nowhere in the real world such as in a pub or at a music festival could you perform a search to find the right person in the way you can do online by applying your own criteria.
If you are thinking of dipping your toes in the world of online dating, bear in mind that not all dating websites are the same; ‘horses for courses’ is a phrase that springs to mind. So, if all you are interested in achieving using internet dating is a string of short-term relationships then choose a website which matches that aim. Alternatively, if you are looking for true love then choose a website which bases its marketing on delivering that concept.
Some dating websites even offer a unique twist. For example, rather than agonise over writing your own profile, pondering what to include and what to leave out, some sites allow your friend to do it for you! They also select a photograph that they think most looks like you and best conveys your personality and recommends you to others on the website.
However, if you do write your own dating profile be brutally honest and don’t be tempted to use a favoured photograph from ten years previously when you looked like a young god or goddess! You certainly wouldn’t like it if you turned up to a date and the person you met bore no resemblance to their image and worse still their profile. So, don’t do it to others and if you do give online matchmaking a go – have fun!
